Adventurer is the lore name for player characters. They are also referred to as champions or heroes. Although unnamed and numerous, it is thanks to these brave individuals that Azeroth and Outland have been saved on numerous occasions in recent and past times.
Races and classes
The adventurers mostly come from either of the two larger factions on Azeroth, being the Horde and Alliance, death knights are considered part of The Knights of the Ebon Blade though they mostly retain their allegiance to their former faction. As such, most of them are of the seven larger races of each faction, namely blood elves, darkspear trolls, draenei, dwarves, forsaken, gnomes, goblins, humans, night elves, orcs, pandaren, tauren and worgen.
Adventurers are mostly loyal to their faction, Horde or Alliance, but are willing to work for other neutral organizations such as the Argent Dawn or Steamwheedle Cartel for either gold or faction rewards.
As the skirmishes between the Horde and the Alliance continue to push the two factions to all out war, the adventurers of the world are always on the forefront of many battlefields. While the old hatreds burn bright in the hearts of many of them, they have been willing to fight alongside one another against greater foes, as seen at the Dark Portal.
Adventurers are very loyal to their home factions, however, and will quickly respond when they hear the call to war.
Where a regiment of orc grunts or human footmen fail, the adventurers succeed. Many are one-man (or one-woman) armies, being able to defeat a large number of enemies, whilst even getting stronger. Their strength comes from slaying foes and performing tasks as well as from the magic coming from their armor, weapons or magic items. Yet, when the time comes, adventurers work together, unlocking incredible power to defeat powerful monsters.
Although each adventurer has a different sort of gear, all have a . This magic stone, through some sort of strange, arcane ritual performed by an innkeeper, allows the wielder to return to a specific location where the stone is bound to.
Though uncertain why or how, the adventurers saved the day numerous times in recent years, from fighting off (or for) the Orcish Horde during the First and Second Wars, to assisting Prince Arthas Menethil in purging Stratholme and battling the Burning Legion atop Mount Hyjal.
Four years after the third war, the Adventurers found themselves overwhelmed with work. From stopping Orgrimmar's corruption from Ragefire Chasm and stopping the prisoners escaping The Stockades. They are responsible for ending the Defias Brotherhood's criminal empire, by killing its leader in the Deadmines. Adventurers have also been able to slay Zalazane and liberate Gnomeregan.
Adventurers have aided the druids of Naralex to free him in the Wailing Caverns, and destroyed the Scarlet Crusade's presence in the Scarlet Monastery. The have been attributed to ending the Scourge experiments in Scholomance and slaying the scourge in Stratholme including Baron Rivendare and Balnazzar.
They also aided in the chaotic Blackrock Mountain, defeating Nefarian in his lair halting his plans. On the other side of the world, they gained favor with the Brood of Nozdormu in Silithus, and are responsible for the re-opening of the Gates of Ahn'Qiraj. In the Plaguelands they joined the Argent Dawn in fighting off the Scourge during its invasions and sparking the invasion of Naxxramas. Despite the common word, some adventurers claim it was they, not Varian Wrynn, who have slain Onyxia. Some even claim they have slain her not once, not twice, but three times.
The war in Outland
This section concerns content exclusive to The Burning Crusade.
A year later, by the request of either the hunted Draenei or the betrayed Blood Elves, they journeyed into Outland, holding off the Illidari and Burning Legion activities. They have also aided the Keepers of Time in restoring the timeline in the Caverns of Time. With their aid, Lady Vashj, Kael'Thas Sunstrider, and Illidan Stormrage, powerful aggressors who resided in Outland, were slain. They also prevented another large-scale invasion of Azeroth by the Burning Legion when they fought alongside the Shattered Sun Offensive to defeat Kil'jaeden and restore the Sunwell.
The war against the Scourge
This section concerns content exclusive to Wrath of the Lich King.
Another year later, The Knights of the Ebon Blade, having revolted against their master, joined alongside the adventurers to fight against the evils of the Undead Scourge in Northrend. ending the Nexus War, and driving back the Old God Yogg-Saron with the help of Brann Bronzebeard and the Kirin Tor. They braved the Argent Tournament, even going as far as assaulting Icecrown Citadel and defeating the Lich King alongside Tirion Fordring and the Ashen Verdict. They also made great strides ingratiating the mortal races to the Dragonflights, helping prevent the remains of their ancestor Galakrond from Scourge corruption, stopping the creation of twilight dragons in the Obsidian Sanctum, and expelling the cruel Black dragonflight (and their commander, Halion) from the Ruby Sanctum.
This section concerns content exclusive to Cataclysm.
Just when the battle-hardened adventurers of Azeroth had triumphed against the Scourge, they returned home, only to find another major threat was on the rise — the Twilight's Hammer cult. With reports of earthquakes, wayward elementals and doomsday cultists preaching the end is nigh, adventurers once again heeded the hero's call. The chaos brought about by sudden changes in leadership, the rising tensions between factions, and mass panic due to the cataclysm have placed a great burden on the adventurers. Thought they are not without help, as the Goblins of Kezan, forced from their homes in the Great Sea, have bolstered the forces (and technology) of the Horde. While the secluded Gilneans, transformed into savage Worgen, have rejoined the Alliance for assistance in the face the Forsaken invasion. The re-emergence of Deathwing and his forces brought Azeroth in a war against the elements and the destroyer himself.
Ragnaros, after being banished in the Molten Core, was resummoned to Azeroth by Deathwing in order to destroy the World Tree Nordrassil. Ysera had adventurers reawaken other Ancient guardians to aid in the battle and finally pushed the Twilight's Hammer out of Mount Hyjal. To prevent the world from breaking apart, Adventurers joined forces with Thrall and the Earthen Ring to repair the World Pillar, battling the Twilight's Hammer in Deepholm to recover the broken pieces, renewing trust back between Therazane and the mortal races. The naga, allied with Deathwing and the Twilight's Hammer, began waging a war against Neptulon, in an effort to take control of the seas themselves. The Naga invaded the Abyssal Maw and forced Neptulon into hiding with the help the kraken of Ozumat. Inside the Abyssal Maw, heroes helped Neptulon as he cleansed the waters, defeating the kraken who fled the battle. Al'Akir's domain, the Skywall, was brought down into the hidden providence of Uldum. After having allied with those who refused his gift, against those who accepted it, adventurers managed to bring the front into the elemental lord's lair, and to kill him. In the Twilight Highlands, the dire Twilight Citadel, entrance to the Bastion of Twilight was besieged by adventurers, who made it to Cho'gall killing him and a moment later Sinestra who was hidden under the great spire.
In the midst of this crises, the Zandalari, with their homeland destroyed by the cataclysm, united many of the trolls, seeking to create another Troll Empire. Thanks to the warning of Vol'jin and the Darkspear tribe, the adventurers managed to stop them, and launched invasions of Zul'Aman and Zul'Gurub. Once the surface of Mount Hyjal had been cleared, Malfurion Stormrage, Hamuul Runetotem and Cenarius lead a charge against Ragnaros in Sulfuron Spire, driving him back to the Firelands. Just when the situation across the seemed to be coming under control, Ragnaros reinvigorated the invasion of Hyjal and gained a foothold. Adventurers rushed to it's aid once again, and established a permanent outpost in the Molten Front. After the loss of many warriors and the recruiting of many allies, the Avengers of Hyjal plunged into the depths of the Firelands and assaulted the Firelord himself on his throne, killing him once and for all. Meanwhile Kalecgos of the Blue Dragonflight, with the help of an adventurer, exposed Arygos betrayal, and was chosen as the new aspect of magic.
In a final push to end Deathwing's plaguing of Azeroth, the Dragon Aspects now joined by Thrall and some adventurers decided to retrieve the Demon Soul, Deathwing's own creation. As they traveled across different timelines, they retrieved the artifact and prepared for the final battle. Deathwing, aware of their intentions, launched a massive assault on Wyrmrest Temple, attempting to stop Thrall from reaching the Aspects. Using a powerful Alliance gunship to get on the back of the mighty aspect, warriors of the Alliance and Horde dismantled his armor, allowing Thrall to blast a hole through his chest with the Dragon Soul. As Deathwing fell into the Maelstrom without his armor, his molten form begins to mutate, granting him a form far more terrifying than before. With the help of Thrall and the Aspects the mighty dragon met his demise, concluding the Elemental war.
Mists of Pandaria
This section concerns content exclusive to Mists of Pandaria.
Immediately after the fall of Deathwing and his servants, the adventurers respective leaders have dedicated their factions completely to war. They later move to the lost land of Pandaria, where they encounter a people who could change them all. Following the successful campaigns in Northrend and in the lands opened by the Shattering, and the deaths of the Lich King at Icecrown Citadel and Deathwing the Destroyer at the Maelstrom, the expansion refocuses primarily on the war between the Alliance and Horde, in the wake of the accidental rediscovery of the mythical and long-forgotten lands of Pandaria, a continent far to the south that has until now been shrouded in magical mists and touched by the ancient malevolence known only as the Sha. With both factions landing on Pandaria, adventurers rediscover the ancient Pandaren people, whose wisdom will help guide them to new destinies; the Pandaren Empire's ancient enemy, the Mantid; and their legendary oppressors, the enigmatic Mogu. As conflicts heat up between the Alliance and Horde, the land changes over time, with subsequent patches having escalated the conflict between Alliance leader Varian Wrynn and the increasingly unbalanced Horde warchief Garrosh Hellscream... eventually leading to a schism within the Horde itself. As civil war wracks the Horde, the Alliance and forces in the Horde opposed to Hellscream's violent uprising join forces to take the battle directly to the enemy, leading to direct confrontation with Hellscream and his Sha-touched allies in the expansion's concluding showdown deep within the bowels of Orgrimmar itself.
Warlords of Draenor
This section concerns content exclusive to Warlords of Draenor.
Adventurers chase after Garrosh Hellscream who escapes from capture and goes back in time with Kairoz and Zaela to Old Draenor to stop the Orcs from drinking the Blood of Mannoroth. An event that shaped Orc history and began the First War.
