Gamon before Cataclysm
  •  [Tazan's Key] could be pickpocketed from Gamon for the quest H [13] The Shattered Hand. Gamon was originally described in the quest as a drunkard, and the assistant of Tazan, a troll who traded with the pirates near Ratchet and who possessed information wanted by the Shattered Hand. Gamon possessed the key to Tazan's satchel, and the player was tasked with picking his pockets in order to obtain it. Any mob that a player can pickpocket has to be attackable. While this placed Gamon in the difficult situation of being constantly killed, it also made the quest very difficult to complete since players might not have had a good chance of actually finding Gamon alive, especially on high population servers during peak hours. For Horde rogues, this could be one of the most frustrating quests in the game.
  • Unlike the other NPC characters in Orgrimmar, Gamon was attackable and many Horde players enjoyed assassinating him when he appeared in the inn. There was no penalty for killing Gamon. Often, Horde players traveling through Orgrimmar or logging in from the inn would hear the sounds of a bar fight followed by a tauren death groan.
  • Although it was probably an unintentional design quirk on Blizzard's part, the player-driven murders of Gamon contributed to the atmosphere of Orgrimmar as being a rough place. Gamon is a famous mob because his deaths were once so frequent and public, as players often tried to drag him out of the inn to kill him in front of the Auction House, where everyone could watch. This may be the case even more so in Cataclysm due to his status as an elite. Observing players frequently respond to Gamon's death by targeting him and spamming emotes such as /cry, /mourn, /spit, /laugh, and /dance.
  • Gamon was susceptible to mind control. Priests enjoyed sending him out of the inn to run and jump around Orgrimmar's citizens. Gamon had a unique ability called Pride Breaker which could be used on other players and NPCs that did no damage, but would punt them about 5 yards. This would also dismount a mounted player. Since patch 3.1.0, this ability has been removed.
  • Gamon's re-spawn timer was 5 minutes after he was killed, so rogues could attempt to camp him. However, any high-level player could simply one-shot Gamon, so you had to be very quick on your feet. It was best to announce as often as possible, even risking spamming, in General Chat that you needed Gamon for your quest, from the moment you picked it up until you managed to pickpocket him, and hope other players would be merciful. This did not always work; some players either didn't pay attention or simply didn't care, while others spawned in the Orgrimmar inn and killed Gamon immediately out of habit without seeing the message.

Wrath of the Lich King

Gamon is involved in the end of the death knight introduction chain — H Death knight [55] Warchief's Blessing — in which he promises to protect the citizens of Orgrimmar from the encroaching death knight. While all other NPCs will appear unfriendly to the death knight, Gamon is actively hostile and will chase after any death knight that comes too close, loudly yelling that he will save Orgrimmar. However, as a level 12 he was of little concern.

In addition, during the Battle for the Undercity quest chain, players were sent back to a different (phased) Orgrimmar under martial law to talk to Thrall. Gamon could be found, among other loyal Horde citizens, gathering in front of the bank.

Gamon in Cataclysm.
A raid-style kill of Gamon shortly after the release of Patch 4.0.3a.

With the release of patch 4.0.3a, Gamon received a substantial overhaul, going from a simple level 12 mob to a level 85 elite. He also hit extremely hard, and was a significant challenge to defeat, especially as players were still level-capped at 80 at that time. The change prompted the creation of a number of forum threads, with many players thrilled and amused to see Gamon apparently wreaking revenge on those who had killed him so repeatedly for so long. Before this point it was still customary for many players to kill Gamon quite regularly simply because they could (with a single click of the mouse); many players subsequently reported being caught off-guard by the change, idly attacking Gamon only to find themselves one-shotted by the mighty 85 elite he had suddenly become. Death knights completing the introductory quest chain that led them into Orgimmar also faced the wrath of Gamon, who as a newly level 85 elite, was able to charge and oneshot the far lower-level death knight. While Gamon's appearance largely remained the same, where he was previously empty-handed, he now sported an impressive and unique two-handed axe.

With the announcement of Garrosh's ascendance to the throne of warchief earlier that year, the phrase "Gamon for Warchief!" had begun to appear on various sites, including as a poll on MMO Champion.[2] With the changes in patch 4.0.3a, the phrase began to trend significantly, with many humorously predicting an assault by Gamon upon Garrosh.

Among the many forum threads, the change also received some comment from forum moderators:

He’s been eating a lot of porridge so don’t get him mad.
If you do, form a raid. He drops many copper!
Imagine how you would feel being beaten up everyday by low-level ale drinkers just for kneeling there with a yellowy glow.
He's out for revenge...[3]

Following the changes, players often formed raid groups to kill Gamon, commonly kiting him out of the inn to fight him in full view of dozens of players. Players also enjoyed linking epic/legendary items in chat, jokingly claiming that the items were epic/legendary drops from Gamon. He did, however, drop typical level 12 loot.

Sadly, as the expansion progressed, and players reached the level cap and acquired ever more powerful gear, Gamon became a far less challenging opponent, able to be defeated by a small group or even single players.

Gamon ambushed by Kor'kron.

Gamon became surrounded between the auction house and the Broken Tusk inn in the Valley of Strength by several Kor'kron Overseers, who demanded that he put his axe down and go with them quietly.

  • Kor'kron Overseer says: Come with us, fool. You don't want this to get bloody.
  • Kor'kron Overseer says: I am going to enjoy crushing your spirit.
  • Kor'kron Overseer says: Look at this dishonorable creature. You smell of straw.
  • Kor'kron Overseer says: Where do you think you'll run to? The Kor'kron control this city.
  • Kor'kron Overseer says: You are asking for an axe in your back. Drop the weapon, now.
  • Kor'kron Overseer says: You don't want to force the hand of the warchief.

Siege of Orgrimmar

Having been captured, Gamon was taken to the Drag and forced to kneel beside a tree, under the watchful eye of a Kor'kron Overseer and the rifle sights of three Kor'kron Grunts. The overseer ordered that Gamon be tied to the tree.

Kor'kron Overseer says: Lash him to the tree!

It is thusly that the player finds Gamon restrained to the tree after the fact. He feels hatred for falling to orcs in battle and participates in the fight against General Nazgrim. He is also the subject of an achievement: [Gamon Will Save Us!].

Gamon is now located on the second floor of the Broken Tusk inn and has a title of "Hero of Orgrimmar".

Building an inn in your garrison will trigger Gamon to come in for a quest for you and gives you his Braid to fight alongside when you have need of him.
