Garrosh Hellscream is the final boss encounter of Siege of Orgrimmar. Garrosh, now wielding Xal'atoh, will incapacitate Thrall before turning his attention to the players and fight with the powers of the Heart of Y'Shaarj. This is the last major battle in World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria.

Background

Main article: Garrosh Hellscream

Dungeon Journal

Garrosh, son of Grommash Hellscream, first learned of his father's heroism when Thrall encountered the young orc in Outland. The seeds of pride were planted. Garrosh spearheaded Horde victories in Northrend and, as Warchief, consolidated Horde power amidst the chaos of the Cataclysm. But his visions of orc supremacy by any means have brought the armies of the world crashing down upon Orgrimmar . . . a final reckoning that Garrosh himself awaits with brutal relish.

Encounter Design

Even though you fight him in his throne room beneath the city of Orgrimmar, far away from the verdant shores of Pandaria, Garrosh is still the ultimate villain of the Pandaria expansion, and we felt that it was important to forge a strong connection to the Pandaria story arc within the encounter itself. As Garrosh wields the power of Y’Shaarj—origin of all the sha—players must battle through some of the most memorable locations where the sha manifested in Pandaria. At the end, when his back is up against a wall and he is cornered in his own lair, Garrosh ends up facing the same sort of choice that once doomed his father.[1]

Overview

When you start the encounter, Garrosh begins to hurl his descrated weapon that does AoE damage and Kor'kron mobs begin to summon though the first stage to assist Garrosh. During the first stage, the minions will have numerous abilities, one of the minions summon an Iron Star that explodes upon contact and blasts players back some yards and if Kor'kron are in its way, them also. Farseers will heal Garrosh and his allies, through the fight. Once Garrosh has been defeated to 10% health, he will absorb the power of Y'shaarj, healing him to full health and granting him new abilities to use. Once he is down to 10%, he will transform again, empowering his abilities even further, also, granting him full energy, Garrosh is now in his final stage. He will throw his newly empowered weapon in a random spot once more, it does AoE damage that heals it and grants it energy every time it damages a player.

Strategy

Stage One: The True Horde

This guide will be from the perspective of the players entering the room, facing Garrosh's throne to the south. The tank who is on Garrosh should stand on the metal plate on the "top" of the giant Horde crest in the middle of the room, with Garrosh between the tank and the throne. The other tank should stack the adds on Garrosh so they will be hit by AoE attacks, cleaves, legendary cloak procs, etc. The melee DPS should stack on Garrosh and attack him.

The raid leader should place raid markers flanking each side of the main entrance, one on the left, one on the right. All the ranged DPS and healers should stack together on one of these markers.

When the Iron Stars start charging up, one of the ranged DPS should run to the left and kill the Kor'kron engineer to prevent the star on the front side of the room from rolling. The other iron star should roll across the back side of the room and deal massive damage to any adds that it runs over. When it starts rolling, players should use knockbacks, such as a warrior's [Dragon Roar] or elemental shaman's [Thunderstorm], to push the adds into the iron star's path.

Garrosh will throw a Desecrated Weapon at one of the ranged players, creating a large void zone. When this happens, the ranged group should move to the other marker, and attack and destroy the Desecrated Weapon to remove the void zone. It is very important that melee players stay within melee range of Garrosh, otherwise he may throw a Desecrated Weapon at the melee player, which would be very bad.

When the adds appear, DPS them to roughly 50% health, so that the iron stars will finish them off. However, when a Farseer Wolf Rider appears, he will be a high priority target, as he will attempt to heal Garrosh and the adds. Keep him interrupted and burn him down, and if possible, try to get him run over by an iron star.

Once Garrosh reaches 10% health, he will do some RP before beginning the intermission. Take advantage of this time to take out any adds, and especially take out any Farseer Wolf Riders, as they will appear in phase 2 if they are not killed.

Intermission: Realm of Y'shaarj

If you are sent to the Terrace of Endless Spring, everyone should just run to the end, with the tank leading and picking up adds, then AoE them all down.

If you are sent to the Temple of the Red Crane, split the group into two, one going left, the other going right, but make sure the tank lands the first attack on the big add at the end of the tunnel, as the big add is likely to one-shot any other player.

If you are sent to the Temple of the Jade Serpent, split the group into two, one going left, the other going right, and take out all the adds as you go.

Take down all the adds as quickly as possible so that Garrosh does not gain too much corruption. Regardless of where you are sent, once all the adds are down, Garrosh will be exposed. Players should grab any yellow bubbles that appear, as it will reduce damage taken during the intermission. Everyone should attack him and avoid his cone attack, as it will one-shot any player who gets hit by it. Everyone will also take unavoidable damage, so the healers should be prepared. The more players who grabbed the yellow bubbles, the easier this will be. In the first intermission, you do not want Garrosh to gain more than 24 corruption.

Stage Two: Corruption of Y'shaarj

Garrosh will no longer summon the Kor'kron adds or Iron Stars that he summoned in phase 1. If there are any left, finish them off. Instead, he will start to use his abilities he gained from Y'shaarj. His first ability is Desecrated Weapon, which should be handled the same way as in phase 1. Occasionally, Garrosh may cause more intermissions, which heal him for 10% health, and cause him to gain more corruption.

His next ability is Whirling Corruption, in which Garrosh does a large channeled AoE attack which deals more damage the closer the player is to Garrosh. All healers and DPS, melee included, should move to the the marker not currently occupied by a Desecrated Weapon, and stack. This ability will become empowered at 25 corruption. When this happens, players will need to move from swirly void zones and kill adds. It is very important that adds not be killed next to each other, as this will cause any nearby adds to heal to full and become buffed. Therefore, the tanks should NOT tank these adds.

His next ability is Touch of Y'shaarj, which mind-controls 2 players (4 in 25 man, 3 in LFR), who will then attempt to spread the Touch of Y'shaarj. Burn them down to break their mind control, and interrupt them whenever they cast Touch of Y'shaarj. Try to use avoid big dots or delayed damage attacks, as they will stay on the player even after mind control breaks. At 50 corruption, this will become empowered, causing mind controlled players to become immune to CC effects, including stuns. For this reason, players should try to only interrupt MC'd players and avoid stuns, so as to avoid getting into the habit of stunning after the ability becomes empowered.

At 75 corruption, Desecrated Weapon becomes empowered. When this happens, the Desecrated Weapons can no longer be destroyed, but they can still be DPSed down to shrink their void zones, and will eventually self-repair and grow back to full size. When this happenes, the raid will no longer be able to switch between the 2 markers they have been using before, and will need to move around the room.

His final ability is Gripping Despair, which is a stacking dot that is applied to the currently active tank, and serves as the taunt swap mechanic. It becomes empowered at 100 corruption. When it is empowered, it will cause a large amount of instant damage to the tank when it expires, so healers will need to get that tank topped off right before it expires, and tanks may need to use a personal defensive cooldown.

Phase 2 ends when Garrosh reaches 10% health.

Stage Three: MY WORLD

Garrosh will do some RP and perform a 20% self heal. While the RP is in progress, the group should [Bloodlust], use potions and offensive cooldowns, and burn Garrosh as hard as possible. When the RP is completed, his corruption will jump to maximum, and all his abilities will become empowered.

Garrosh will cast Empowered Touch of Y'shaarj, which is an enhanced mind control that in which the affected players gain more health, and more importantly, are IMMUNE to all forms of CC. To stop them from casting, ONLY direct interrupt spells will work.

Next, Garrosh will cast Empowered Whirling Corruption, which works the same as in the previous phase. Everyone should run far away from the boss, and wait for the Desecrated Weapon to drop before running back. However, due to the time constraints of this phase, it is probably best to ignore the adds and focus the boss.

The Empowered Desecrated Weapon is just like a normal Desecrated Weapon, except it can't be destroyed. Attacking it will cause the void zone to shrink, but it will just grow back eventually.

This phase will continue until Garrosh is defeated. In Heroic mode, this will simply start phase 4.

Tanks and healers will need to be aware of Empowered Gripping Despair, the taunt-swap debuff. In the empowered version, the tank will take a major burst of damage when the debuff expires, so healers will need to top that tank off, and the tank may want to use a defensive cooldown.

Stage Four: Heroic Only

On heroic mode, when stage 3 ends, Garrosh will do some RP before teleporting the raid to the Vision of Ruined Stormwind, at which point he will heal to 60% health. Be advised that the fight does not stop during the RP, and any lingering mechanics from stage 3 (Adds, MC's, etc.) will still need to be dealt with until the teleport happens.

Before cinematic

King Varian Wrynn
At last, the time for justice is at hand. This monster will answer for each and every Alliance life that we have lost in this war.
Thrall
Thank you for helping me end the great mistake I made long ago, that led our people into this dark place. I could not do it alone. Let me regain my honor, and end Garrosh's reign of terror once and for all.

Closing cinematic

Garrosh lies on the ground, defeated. Thrall approaches him, a look of disgust on his face.
Thrall: You disappoint me, Garrosh.
Garrosh tries to rise and drops the  [Tusks of Mannoroth].
Thrall: You are not worthy of your father's legacy.
Thrall raises the Doomhammer to deliver the final blow, but his attack is blocked by Shalamayne.
Varian Wrynn: His punishment is not for you alone to decide.
Thrall: I won't let you take him!
Taran Zhu: We have all suffered from his atrocities.
Taran Zhu approaches while Lorewalker Cho watches.
Taran Zhu: My people, more than any other.
Taran Zhu: Let him stand in trial in Pandaria.
Taran Zhu: There, we will mete out justice for all.
Varian nods at Thrall. They both lower their weapons and step back. Taran Zhu binds Garrosh in chains and leads him away.

Alliance Side

Varian approaches the other Alliance leaders: Jaina Proudmoore, Anduin Wrynn, Moira Bronzebeard, Gelbin Mekkatorque and Tyrande Whisperwind. Genn Greymane and Velen are absent from these events.
Jaina Proudmoore: Ugh... Look at them.
Jaina Proudmoore: Already they plot against us. Seize this moment, Varian.
Jaina Proudmoore: Dismantle the Horde.
Varian Wrynn: Guardsmen!
The soldiers raise their shields and begin marching forward as Anduin looks on in confusion.
Anduin Wrynn: Father - what are you doing?
Varian Wrynn: What a king must do.

Horde Side

Thrall stands with the leaders of the Horde: Vol'jin, Baine Bloodhoof, Lor'themar Theron, Jastor Gallywix and Sylvanas Windrunner.
Vol'jin: The Horde needs its true Warchief now, more than ever.
Thrall: Yes, but it was you that held the Horde together during this madness.
Thrall: It was you that protected our honor.
Thrall: From this day forward, Vol'jin - If you lead, I will follow.
To Vol'jin's surprise, Thrall kneels before him with the Doomhammer at his side.
Vol'jin: I am not worthy...
Lor'themar and Baine bow to Vol'jin. Jastor removes his hat and bows, while Sylvanas simply nods.
Vol'jin: But I will give my all.
Vol'jin: For the Horde.
Vol'jin bowed to his companions, becoming the first non-orc Warchief of the Horde.

Varian Wrynn: I will speak to your Warchief!
The orc soldiers step aside to reveal Vol'jin. Varian looks surprised.
Vol'jin: I speak for the Horde.
Varian looks at Thrall for a moment before returning his attention to Vol'jin.
Varian Wrynn: Very well.
Varian Wrynn: The Horde has committed heinous crimes, Vol'jin.
Varian thrusts Shalamayne into the floor and approaches Vol'jin.
Varian Wrynn: But some among you fought against Garrosh's tyranny.
Varian Wrynn: For that, I am willing to end this bloodshed.
Varian Wrynn: But know this...
Varian begins to walk back to his weapon.
Varian Wrynn: If your Horde fails to uphold honor, as Garrosh did...
Varian pulls Shalamayne out of the floor and turns back to Vol'jin.
Varian Wrynn: We will end you.

Ending NPCs

By your faction leaders, they have something to say to the player after the defeat of Garrosh:

Alliance perspective

King Varian Wrynn
Thank you, hero. You and your companions here were the tip of the Alliance spear: Your work exploring Pandaria, securing the Vale, and ultimately assaulting Garrosh's stronghold is what made this victory possible.
Our triumph here will put a stop to the fighting in Kalimdor, but even in peace, there's much to be done - here, back home, and elsewhere.
Gossip What's next for the Alliance?
We are unified like never before. We've bought our people security in Kalimdor, an end to the blockade, and an end to the total war that's spilt so much blood on either side of the great sea.
Now, to the work of winning the peace. I would like to station a garrison near Theramore. We need to investigate cleansing the plague from Gilnean lands so they can rebuild. We must contain Sylvanas.
From here on forward, the Alliance will be proactive. Never again can there be another the likes of Hellscream.
Gossip Why not keep fighting?
I understand your desire to inflict more suffering on the Horde. But when do we stop? How many more will number among the dead if we invaded Thunder Bluff, Azshara, and the Echo Isles? And how would we govern the conquered people?
The pandaren always question why we fight. Today, we've won justice, and have given the Horde an opportunity to atone by supporting their rebellion. Further bloodshed would be for vengeance alone - and it would reap vengeance in return.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore
King Wrynn will rue the day he allowed the Horde to name another Warchief.
We should've kept fighting. Who's to say this new Warchief won't get any ideas in his troll head a few years from now?
Moira Thaurissan
There's nothing like a common enemy to bring people together. The dwarven clans have never been so united. If the peace holds, our three kingdoms will be stronger than ever before...
Tyrande Whisperwind
Varian and I spoke at length about the price of peace before his decision here today. I am willing to allow the Horde the use of Azshara's lumber if they abandon Ashenvale for good. Knowing the way goblins chew through resources, we will see how long that will sustain them.
I support this peace, but I do not share the High King's confidence. If the Horde breaks treaty to engage us again... my people will be ready.
High Tinker Mekkatorque
Victory for the Alliance! Before we clear out of here, my people will grab as much of this crazy technology as we can get our hands on.
Vol'jin
Dat's de end of Hellscream.
<Vol'jin eyes you warily.>
What's next, <race>?
Thrall, Trade Prince Gallywix, Lady Sylvanas Windrunner, Baine Bloodhoof, Lor'themar Theron
I have nothing to say to you, <race>.

Horde perspective

Thrall
I thought Garrosh was ready. I thought the mantle of Warchief would give him perspective. Of the many problems facing our people, he saw only one solution - his vision of the Horde brought us to the brink.
It is time for a new direction. Vol'jin will take us there. In many ways he did not want this responsibility... but I think that will make him a better leader.
Vol'jin
Stand tall, <class>. Today ya saved de soul of de Horde.
Lor'themar Theron
I find politics exhausting. I am confident Vol'jin will take us where we need to go.
<Lor'themar glances over Sylvanas.>
Assuming he can hold this Horde together.
Baine Bloodhoof
We are all in this together, <class>.
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner
"Warchief Vol'jin." Does it sound absurd to you, <class>? I, for one, certainly won't be taking orders from a troll.
But, he put this little coalition together, and won the day. He's also proven to be impossible to kill - I admire that.
Time to test what he's made of...
Trade Prince Gallywix
Vol'jin's one tough nut. Stabbed in the neck, still he comes back to collect what's due. I like this guy!
My people need security and profit. Under Hellscream, we got a whole lot of neither.
King Varian Wrynn
I have nothing to say to you, <race>. Your people have a lot to answer for. But maybe this is a new beginning.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore, Moira Thaurissan, Tyrande Whisperwind, High Tinker Mekkatorque
I have nothing to say to you, <race>.

Both perspective

Anduin Wrynn
I think my father did the right thing. If we tried to occupy Orgrimmar, the fighting would never stop. And what about the rest of the Horde? Would we resort to internment camps? We've been down that road before - it doesn't work!
We deposed of a warmonger and replaced him with a leader we can work with. It's our only chance for peace in the future.
