Heirloom

From Wowpedia
Jump to: navigation, search

Heirloom is an item type that was introduced with Wrath of the Lich King.[1] The items have a golden hue in their text color, and their attributes scale with the character's level.[2] Nearly all heirloom items are named after popular items from the early days of Classic WoW, and share the look of these items.

Once purchased, heirlooms bind to the account, as opposed to an individual character. This means they can be mailed to any character that shares the same account, including those of opposing faction or on different realms (as of Patch 5.4.2). Heirloom items can be returned for a refund within the normal two-hour grace period, but only if the item was not yet mailed to a different character.

Heirloom shoulders, chest pieces, cloaks, helms, legs and the ring grant greater experience gains while wearing them. The experience bonuses stack with each other and with the rested bonus, and affect experience gains from quests, but do not stack with Essence of Wintergrasp. The maximum possible experience bonus from heirlooms alone is 50%. The experience bonus on shoulders, chestpieces and the ring stops at level 80, and the bonus on the pants and helmets stop at level 85.

The level 80 stats on some 1-85 gear are based on Wrath of the Lich King level 80 Level Cap stats, so as you progress into Cataclysm you will get gear that have better stats than your heirloom gear - this is probably on the assumption you will keep leveling through those zones until 81. If you go right to Cataclysm at 80 your stats will be low, but still manageable and the XP bonus will ensure you get to 81 faster, at which point you will get appropriate Cataclysm stats on the heirloom gear.

Heirloom items do not have a durability stat, and do not need to be repaired. This saves money when leveling your character.

Heirloom item restrictions are skill based and not class based. For example, any class could wear the cloth shoulders and chest for the 20% experience boost, but classes such as warriors and rogues would not benefit from the item's casting stats. Because characters don't typically get any shoulder or head gear until after level 20, putting any lower-armor-type XP enhancing heirloom you may have sitting around (like cloth, which all can wear) on even a mail or leather class will be helpful until you start getting equipment for what would otherwise just be just an empty slot.

For classes that can wear mail and plate items, while the character is under level 40, heirlooms will appear as leather or mail armor types until that character is able to wear the mail or plate armor type. For example, when purchasing an heirloom for a shaman, you want to buy a mail heirloom item, which will scale down to leather when equipped on the shaman until the shaman reaches level 40, when it will become mail again.

Stat values

An heirloom's stats correspond to the item level of a blue quality item requiring its wearer's level until the heirloom stops leveling, as specified by the tooltip. However, heirlooms give bonuses to four different stats from a far lower level than blue items start doing so. At level 80, heirlooms are approximately equivalent to an item level 187 rare item, and will ultimately be replaced by questing, instancing, and PvP at the maximum level.

On reaching levels 58 and 68, players will notice unusually large stat increases to heirlooms, because these are the lowest required levels for blues introduced in, respectively, Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King. The same is true at level 81 for Cataclysm heirloom cloaks and pants. However, while blue items introduced in Cataclysm all require at least level 81, uncommon items of level 272 only require level 77.

For almost any given justice-point heirloom weapon or armor item, as well as for each of the heirloom cloaks at level 80, there exist four uncommon replacements that:

  • Occur as world drops.
  • Bind when equipped.
  • Have the same stats as the heirloom with higher values.
  • Have required levels of 77, 78, 79 and 80.
  • Have item levels of 272, 278, 283 and 289.
  • Have four consecutive item IDs (see ItemString).
  • Have the item suffix "of the Earthfall" (for Strength items), "of the Windflurry" (for Agility items), or "of the Fireflash" (for Intellect items).

Tips for early purchasing

If you're thrifty and plan to level several alts, aim for gear many different classes can use even if the gear might be not be optimal for all of them. The best gear to own would be the following:

Weapons, Rings, Trinkets
Cloth Intellect Gear
Leather Agility Gear
Plate Strength Gear

Once you own these sets, then you can safely purchase the Leather, Mail, and Plate intellect versions, as well as the Mail Agility version and the Plate version you did not buy (tanking vs non-tanking)

WoD This section concerns content exclusive to Warlords of Draenor.

Note that in World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor, Heirlooms are slated to be in a Collection and you should be able to create multiple copies of each heirloom you have at least one of. This promotes purchasing one of every heirloom instead of multiple of each type - common for trinkets and multiple characters. They also plan on making Agility, Intellect, and Strength morph to whichever is most useful for your specialization. This would make purchasing Leather, Mail, and Plate intellect gear less necessary. It is still unclear if replacement heirlooms that scale from 1-90 will in introduced in WoD.

Enchanting your heirlooms

Main article: Enchantments by Slot

Heirlooms can be enchanted only with enhancements that will not bind the item to the character. All enchantments can be applied to heirloom items. High level enhancements applied to items equipped by low level players have their power scaled down down to be similar to enhancements intended for that level range. Note that profession specific enchantments still require the profession.

Head

Heirloom heads have a 10% experience boost from quests and kills and stack with all other Heirloom items.

These items are sold by Guild vendors after completing the achievement  Guild Level 20. You will also need Honored Guild Reputation to purchase these items.

Below, classes in square brackets are not in the proper armor class, but will still get the stat benefit from the listed heirloom. Classes in brackets will find the heirloom significantly weaker than another one, but will still benefit. Keep this in mind if buying an heirloom for several alts to use.

Shoulders

Heirloom shoulders have a 10% experience boost from quests and kills and stack with all other Heirloom items.

The heirloom shoulders were originally sold only in Wintergrasp or Dalaran. In Patch 3.2.0, the shoulders sold in Dalaran are also purchasable from Dame Evniki Kapsalis at the Argent Tournament Grounds in Icecrown for Champion's Seals once the title <Crusader> has been earned.[3]. Starting with Patch 4.3.0, heirloom PvE shoulders are now available as prizes at the Darkmoon Faire from Daenrand Dawncrest.

Hodir Shoulder Enchants

Heirloom shoulder enchants can be used at any level, but are only usable by level 80 characters. This is to allow for the use of these enchants without having to grind through the reputations of Sons of Hodir with another character.

Note that the Sons of Hodir heirloom items are only the highest level version of the item the faction vendor carries. For example,  [Lesser Inscription of the Axe] is not an Heirloom and the name will not appear in a brown color in the vendor's trade window.

Name Faction Reputation Cost
[Greater Inscription of the Axe] Sons of Hodir Exalted 100g
[Greater Inscription of the Crag] Sons of Hodir Exalted 100g

[Greater Inscription of the Storm] Sons of Hodir Exalted 100g

Chest pieces

Heirloom chest pieces have a 10% experience boost from quests and kills and stack with all other Heirloom items.

These can be purchased from Dame Evniki Kapsalis once the title <Crusader> has been earned, at the Argent Tournament Grounds in Icecrown costing 60 [Champion's Seal], or from Enchanter Erodin (Horde) / Enchanter Isian (Alliance) in Dalaran costing 2175 Justice Points. They can also be purchased as prizes at the Darkmoon Faire from Daenrand Dawncrest.

Weapons

Like the shoulders, many of these weapons and other heirlooms were originally sold either in Dalaran or in Wintergrasp. PvE weapons were later added with the Argent Tournament and the Darkmoon Faire. Note that unlike armor heirlooms, weapon and trinket heirlooms do not grant an experience bonus. The weapons do indirectly assist in leveling, however, by giving the character a rare-quality weapon that can be enhanced with almost any pre-expansion enchant (the most useful enchants, listed below for your convenience, are generally too expensive to apply to leveling gear).

These weapons are generally useful until level 80, when they stop progressing with players, however they can be upgraded by trading in the weapon and with more currency to make them last until level 85.
