Skinning equipment[]
The only equipment required for skinning is a skinning knife.
You can boost your skinning skill up to +25 skinning skill by wearing or wielding the proper equipment (and Worgen Racial Ability [Flayer] gives additional +15 Skinning).
- [Pip's Skinner] is a one-handed dagger that adds +10 to Skinning skill when wielded. It drops off The Beast in Upper Blackrock Spire.
- [Zulian Slicer] is a one-handed sword that adds +10 to Skinning skill when wielded. Before patch 4.0.3a, it used to drops off High Priest Thekal in Zul'Gurub (Classic).
- [Zulian Slasher] is a one-handed sword that adds +10 to Skinning skill when wielded. It drops off Zanzil in Zul'Gurub (instance).
- [Pip's Shanker] is a one-handed dagger that adds +10 to Skinning skill when wielded. It drops off Kyrak in Upper Blackrock Spire(Level 90).
- [Pip's Flenser] is a one-handed dagger that adds +10 to Skinning skill when wielded. It drops off Kyrak in Upper Blackrock Spire(Level 100).
- A glove apparel item enchanted with the [Skinning] or [Gatherer] enchantment adds +5 to skinning skill when worn.
- The glove enchant Enchant Gloves - Legion Skinning allows for faster skinning speed on the Broken Isles.
- [Mother's Skinning Knife] a Toy that allows skinning up to 40 yd away. It is a Quest reward from [10-45] Drakol'nir Must Die
Notes[]
All classes can wield at least one or the other of Pip's Skinner or the Zulian Slicer.
- [Pip's Skinner], a dagger, can never be equipped by a paladin.
- [Zulian Slicer], a sword, can never be equipped by a druid, shaman, nor priest.
- [Zulian Slasher], a sword, can never be equipped by a druid, shaman, nor priest.
A Pip's Skinner, a Zulian Slicer or a Zulian Slasher can be dual wielded for +20 skinning skill, but only by hunters, rogues, death knights and warriors.
The Pip's Skinner is not unique and does not specify a hand, so if you have two Pip's Skinners and you can dual wield daggers (same classes), you should be able to dual wield them. Since the Pip's Skinner is a drop, it should be possible to obtain two.
The above is also true for Zulian Slicer and Zulian Slasher.
Shamans can dual wield via talents, but cannot equip the Zulian Slicer or the Zulian Slasher, which are swords, so shamans must dual wield Pip's Skinners if they wish to achieve +20 skill.
The Enchant Gloves - Skinning or the [Gatherer] enchantment is a permanent enchantment, which means it goes in the permanent enchantment slot of the item, and can be overwritten, but will not go away for any other reason.
Casting these enchantments on a very low level non-binding white or gray quality cloth glove enables the glove to be worn by any character. This will also prevent anyone from accidentally disenchanting the glove. (The materials for the enchantment cannot ever be recovered in any case.)
With the skinning enchantment on gloves, and one of the blades, total bonus to skinning skill is +15, or with all three items it's +25.
Historical note[]
Prior to The Burning Crusade, skinning some high level beast mobs (over level 61) required a skinning skill of 315. Even a fully skilled skinner (300 skinning skill) needed to have at least two of these bonuses equipped (+15).
The Burning Crusade raised the skill cap to 375, and Wrath of the Lich King increased the cap again, to 450. No similar skill over-cap bonus requirement exists in these extensions.
Cataclysm have raised the skill cap to 525, and Dungeon and Raid Bosses require 530 skinning to skin. Nefarian requires 550.
