James Hyal (aka Smiling Jim) is a human who ran the Shady Rest Inn before it was burned to the ground by Grimtotem tauren. His wife and child were killed in the fire and James is reportedly "not the same" since the incident.
He currently sits next to the inn on Theramore Isle. He has a brother, Vincent Hyal, in Menethil Harbor who is unaware of the tragedy of the Shady Rest Inn and sends the player to check on James.
With the coming of patch 2.3, the story of Shady Rest Inn finally got an ending.
It's unknown if he survived the Attack on Theramore Isle, though a Theramore Citizen in the Siege of Orgrimmar uses his exact appearance.

Smiling Jim and the quote he uses were first introduced one year prior to the release of World of Warcraft in Warcraft: The Roleplaying Game. The quote is actually a chorus of a ballad immortalized by minstrels.[1]
