This article contains lore taken from Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, the manuals, and/or official bonus maps.

Hailing from the secretive Pandaren Empire, the mighty brewmasters travel the world in search of exotic ales and the finest brewed spirits. These affable warriors rarely seek out danger or trouble, preferring instead to spend their time concocting new and tasty beverages for any brave enough to imbibe them. However, if attacked, the laughing brewmasters bring all of their pandaren agility and ferocity to bear! They even bring their beer to war! They are peerless warriors and world class drinkers all in one![1]

A warrior Hero, the brewmasters of Pandaria have emerged from the bamboo forests of their ancestors to bring their unique fighting style (and robust ales) to the highest bidder.[2]

Information

A warrior Hero, exceptional at absorbing damage and melee combat. The Brewmasters of Pandaria have emerged from the bamboo forests of their ancestors to bring their unique fighting style (and robust ales) to the highest bidder. Attacks land units.

The Pandaren Brewmaster is an excellent melee hero hired from the Tavern, being a mix of the Orcish Blademaster and Night Elven Demon Hunter. His Drunken Brawler skill combines the Blademaster's Critical Strike and Demon Hunter's Evasion abilities, making him particularly powerful in combat.

Drunken Haze and Breath of Fire is a mana-intense but powerful combo; Drunken Haze slows down enemy units, while Breath of Fire deals considerable damage which is further improved if the units caught in its cone are affected by Drunken Haze. Drunken Haze is a powerful spell that works well against clumped units of any type.

His Ultimate is unique among other heroes - he splits into the three elementals Earth, Fire and Storm. Each element is strong in its own right, and when properly micro'ed they can be extremely dangerous to deal with.

The most common setup for the Pandaren Brewmaster often revolves around using Drunken Haze and Breath of Fire, since it greatly hampers the enemy thanks to Drunken Haze's massive accuracy lowering at level 3, along with Breath of Fire's increased damage from Drunken Haze. Drunken Brawler is seldom used despite not being a mana skill because of the lack of versatility it provides.

For the Pandaren Brewmaster himself, all-round stat items will help him greatly, but those primarily focusing on Agility, Intelligence and attack speed will allow the Pandaren Brewmaster to shine the best in combat. Agility and attack speed helps him increase the chances of Drunken Brawler, while more Intelligence allows him to use Drunken Haze and Breath of Fire more consistently.

Spells and abilities

Breath of Fire

BTNBreathOfFire
Breathes a cone of fire at enemy units which deals damage. Units that have Drunken Haze on them will ignite and take burn damage over time.
Duration Cooldown Mana Cost Range (Max Distance) Area of Effect Allowed Targets
5 sec. 10 sec. 75 37.5 (67.5) 15 Air, Ground, Structure
Level Effect Hero Level Req
1 65 initial damage, 7 damage/sec., 480 max damage 1
2 125 initial damage, 14 damage/sec., 800 max damage 3
3 170 initial damage, 21 damage/sec., 1200 max damage 5

Breath of Fire damage is capped to 8 targets. This does not affect the amount of damage dealt by burning damage from the Breath of Fire / Drunken Haze Combination.

Cast Drunken Haze on a powerful unit, then use Breath of Fire to ignite them.

Remember that the burn-over-time damage on Drunken Hazed enemies effectively doubles the damage of the spell. Due to this and due to the two spells costing the same amount of mana, it is almost always advantageous to cast Drunken Haze on the enemy and then using Breath of Fire.

Drunken Haze

BTNStrongDrink
Drenches a target enemy unit in alcohol, causing its movement speed to be reduced, and have a chance to miss on attacks. When units with Drunken Haze cast on them are hit by Breath of Fire, they will ignite and take burn damage over time.
Duration (Hero) Cooldown Mana Cost Range Area of Effect Allowed Targets
12 (5) sec. 12 sec. 70 55 20 Air, Ground, Enemy, Organic
Level Effect Hero Level Req
1 15% movement speed reduction, 45% miss chance 1
2 30% movement speed reduction, 65% miss chance 3
3 50% movement speed reduction, 80% miss chance 5

Use Drunken Haze on powerful units then use Breath of Fire!

Drunken Haze combines well with other spells. Remember that there is a minimum speed which units move at so slow effects don’t stack well with each other. However, accuracy debuffs do stack. Casting this on a group of enemies while being supported by a Necromancer's Cripple and Pit Lord's Howl of Terror results in the enemies struck by Drunken Haze to deal very little damage in the event that they somehow hit.

Drunken Brawler (Passive)

PASBTNDrunkenDodge
Gives a percent chance to avoid attacks and a 10% chance to deal additional damage.
Level Effect Hero Level Req
1 7% dodge chance, 2 times normal damage 1
2 14% dodge chance, 3 times normal damage 3
3 21% dodge chance, 4 times normal damage 5

This ability is similar to a combination of the Night Elf Demon Hunter’s Evasion ability and the Orc Blade Master’s Critical Strike ability. It is approximately two-thirds as effective as each of them. That’s like getting 33% extra skill for your points!

Drunken Brawler can allow for some very high damage attacks as the Pandaren Brewmaster gets equipment and levels.

Unlike Critical Strike, Drunken Brawler doesn't have an animation whenever the Pandaren Brewmaster manages to land such a hit.

Drunken Brawler does not work on buildings.

Storm, Earth, And Fire (Ultimate)

BTNStormEarth&Fire
Splits the Pandaren Brewmaster into elements, forming 3 specialized warriors. If any of them survive until the end of their summoned timer, the Brewmaster is reborn.
Duration Cooldown Mana Cost Effect Hero Level Req
45 sec. 180 sec. 150 Transforms into Storm, Earth, and Fire 6

Note: When this spell is activated, the Pandaren Brewmaster is temporarily removed from the game, and this also includes the items in his inventory.

This splits the Pandaren into three separate units with their own special abilities: Storm, Earth, and Fire. Storm is the most useful of the three with good micro skills, as he has Cyclone, Wind Walk and Dispel Magic. Use Cyclone against dangerous ground units or Heroes, and Wind Walk to quickly move him out of harms way if he gets targeted.

Earth and Fire are melee brawlers with impressive health and damage. Earth is a mix of a Mountain Giant and Tauren, combining massive health with the ability to deal AoE damage and forcing enemy units to attack him. Fire is simply an Infernal, dealing massive damage coupled with a passive Immolation aura.

Regardless, all three elements come with Resistant Skin. Earth has Spell Immunity. This makes the elements nearly impossible to focus down because they can only be killed by raw damage, and the three elements have 1,200, 1,700 and 1,100 health respectively, giving the Pandaren Brewmaster an effective health of 4,000 while the spell is active. If all three are somehow killed before the timer expires, then the Pandaren Brewmaster will die and need to be revived again. However, this should be unlikely given the spell's short duration of 45 seconds and each element's massive health pool.

Appearances in The Frozen Throne campaigns

In Wrath of the Betrayer a pandaren was in the brewmaster drinking area in the southwest corner of the map. He gave Maiev Shadowsong Slippers of Agility +3 before closing up his shop.

Chen Stormstout is the most prominently featured Brewmaster and is present throughout the Founding of Durotar campaign, albeit only if you complete an optional quest to recruit him.

Two brewmasters appear in the blood elf campaign. In the secret mission The Crossing, one shows up in the final wave to try to stop the blood elves from escaping through the portal. The second one is a secret character. To get the brewmaster, however, the player must survive all the waves of attackers on The Crossing level, including defeating the aforementioned pandaren brewmaster. If successful, they'll control not only Kael and Vashj during the next mission The Search for Illidan, but also a randomly-named brewmaster.

Patch changes

  • WC3tFT-logo Patch 1.18 (2005-03-01):
    • Breath of Fire initial damage reduced to 65/125/170 from 65/130/175.
    • Drunken Haze movement reduction has been changed to increase by level. The new ranks are: 15% / 30% / 50% from the previous 50% / 50% / 50%.
  • WC3tFT-logo Patch 1.17 (2004-09-20): Breath of Fire no longer damages a targeted friendly unit.
  • WC3tFT-logo Patch 1.16 (2004-07-01):
    • Breath of Fire has been damage capped to 8 targets. Note that this does not affect the amount of damage dealt by burning damage from the Breath of Fire / Drunken Haze combination.
    • Storm, Earth and Fire Pandaren hit points increased by 200, and attack damage increased by 33%.
  • WC3tFT-logo Patch 1.15 (2004-05-10): Breath of Fire now correctly has a cone shape at all levels. Previously, the level-2 and level-3 versions were shaped exactly like Shockwave, while the level-1 area was occupying a much larger area than intended. The spell now hits far fewer targets, which roughly matches the graphic. The damage of Breath of Fire has been increased to 65/120/175 from 50/100/150 to compensate for this change.
  • WC3tFT-logo Patch 1.13 (2003-12-16): Breath of Fire and Drunken Haze mana costs reduced to 70 from 75.
  • WC3tFT-logo Patch 1.07 (2003-07-01): Added.
