{{Stub/Notorious}}

Stub/Notorious is not subject speedy deletion stub policy, don't ask me how that came to be, but after conferring with another admin the articles for Blizzard forum posters will remain. --GRYPHONtc 16:40, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

OK. --Pcj 16:41, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

Speedydeleting Talent Pages

It is unnecessary to put the speedydelete tag on articles related to undeveloped articles for in-game abilities and talents, as you are doing. Instead, please us the {{Stub/Ability}} tag so they can be developed further. -- TUSVA ~ T | C 18:35, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

The marked articles already have the {{Stub/Ability}} tag on them and have not been updated in quite some time. This is per WW:SD. --Pcj 18:39, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
Which states that articles can should only be SD'd if "The page has never had any content, especially if it appears that it will never have any content", the latter of which is highly untrue, as I know there are a few contributors working on filling out the ability and talent pages. It makes sense to keep these stub'd so contributors are more aware of them needing work (through Stub cats, etc) rather than leaving gaping holes in the Wiki. -- TUSVA ~ T | C 18:41, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
In my opinion, a red link on the articles that link to them (and in Special:Wantedpages) would be more of an alert that something's missing content. In either case, no content is lost with the deletion of the page, and if people want to put content there, fine. But pages which have been marked "stub" for more than a month seems to indicate that no one's working on it. --Pcj 18:44, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
I agree, looking at the contributions for who started many of the articles have gone on to contribute to other content and have just left them as stubs. I believe red links are more appropriate for content needed than simply a stub. --GRYPHONtc 18:49, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
There is more lost from deleting them then there is gained (the history of the article, the categorization, etc). They've been categorized and already linked in many pages, there is no reason to delete them as they are a permanent element of the game. If we were talking about the content the SD was designed for (extraneous guild pages, personal pages, etc), then I'd support it. As is, I see no reason to completely remove talent and ability articles that are stubbed. -- TUSVA ~ T | C 18:52, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
History is usually confined to 1-3 edits on these articles, because they are stubs. Categorization is flimsy at best, and can be easily re-added by proper use of templates in addition to content (bots add categories all the time). If they're so important as to be linked to in many pages, then they should have content. SD was designed to reduce clutter, which includes stubbed pages without content, as the policy says. --Pcj 18:55, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
That's irrelevant, you're still not gaining anything by just blowing away articles related to permanent abilities and talents in the game that will inevitably be worked on, perhaps sooner than you know. They're hardly clutter, and the time taken to go through and remove them could be better spent improving them or focusing on the real clutter of the Wiki. -- TUSVA ~ T | C 18:59, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
I wouldn't call removing an article with 2 categories and no content blowing away. --GRYPHONtc 19:01, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
I've seen no proof that stubbed articles get edited faster than "wanted" articles. The latter seems more logical to me to edit...the blazing red link always indicates that something's missing, whereas a blue link (even though the destination page is a stub) makes people think content lies within. In any case, in the absence of proof, I'm going to continue until the policy changes. --Pcj 19:03, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
I've seen no proof that red articles get more attention either. If anything, they result in a knee-jerk reaction to throw a stub in there, and we're back where we started. My point is that a small amount of existing information is better than none at all, and the time could be better spent improving articles or focusing on actual clutter. /shrug That's all I have left to say on it, really. :P -- TUSVA ~ T | C 19:08, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
The burden of proof doesn't lie on me to prove that "wanted" articles are edited faster, since I'm not asking you to do anything. I've seen several of the articles deleted created with new content after being stagnant for several months marked as stubbed. My edits comply with policy. --Pcj 19:28, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
I say yell at people creating pages simply to Stub them. If they are linked somewhere then with the use of the Loot/Quest Template people can quickly get to the article on WoWhead, Thottbot, or Alla. In my opinion, stubs should be saved for pages left unfinished by the person who initially created it. Instead of making stubs, or marking with speedydelete, I took an initiative to try and fill the pages.

Speedydelete Spam

Me again. A few things...

I'm sure you'll be hearing more from me as you continue to spam SDs. -- TUSVA ~ T | C 14:10, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

The more pages they're linked from, the more likely it is someone will see the red link if/when they are deleted...if someone's going to put up a screenshot and call it a page you might as well redirect the page to the image, especially since those stubs have been there so long. For your second point, look at the edit before mine. If it's more than a month earlier and has already been stubbed, I put up an SD. Otherwise, if it needs a stub or has been edited considerably within a month, I edit it appropriately. --Pcj (TC) 14:17, 27 June 2007 (UTC)
1)Many of the location pages have more than the screenshot, and your logic about intentionally making red links is contradictory to encouraging contribution, which is the entire point of a Wiki.
2)No where in WW:SD policy does it state it has to be edited within a month otherwise be deleted. I completely contest that arbitrary method of deciding what gets tagged. Using that level of thinking, we could decimate half the wiki because an article hasn't been touched in a month, regardless of the content. -- TUSVA ~ T | C 14:31, 27 June 2007 (UTC)
Well, the stubs certainly aren't working at encouraging contribution, the theory is that during casual browsing a reader is more likely to see a red link than browsing stubs. The month limit is my own determination based upon the policy, which says "The page has never had any content, especially if it appears that it will never have any content". To me, a month is ample time to expect someone to finish an article marked "stub" and which has at best a sentence, maybe a picture, and a few templates which were thrown on there by bots. Otherwise, it's fairly safe to assume the article has been abandoned. --Pcj (TC) 14:38, 27 June 2007 (UTC)
The entire point of a stub is to mark it for further work. Assuming "casual browsers" are going to contribute to an empty article rather than a stubbed one is illogical. The amount of effort to throw in a bit more information to an article that ALREADY EXISTS is much less than going through and creating one from scratch, using local templates, and policies, etc etc. Which do you think a "casual browser" is more likely to contribute to? The one that's already built and needs a bit more pieces of info or one that's completely blank?
Using your logic, we would just delete EVERY article that hadn't been touched in a month if it wasn't complete because it'd be "abandoned". Again, that flies in the face of the goal of community contribution. Some articles may be updated fifteen times a day, others once every other month. That's the nature of the beast. -- TUSVA ~ T | C 14:44, 27 June 2007 (UTC)
I don't mark large stubbed pages as SD, so no, we wouldn't delete EVERY article with my logic. The point is stubs aren't getting updated and have no content. WW:SD explicitly allows for this. See WW:SD#Why "Speedy deletion"? --Pcj (TC) 14:51, 27 June 2007 (UTC)
The reality is a stubbed page is more likely to get updated than an empty one. It might not happen in the 30 days that you have arbitrarily decided a page is "getting updated" is, however, it doesn't mean the page should be reset. I can understand doing mass stubs, but spamming SD's is not constructive to the Wiki and basically creates more work for zero benefit. -- TUSVA ~ T | C 14:57, 27 June 2007 (UTC)
If you want to change the policy, go ahead and propose it. My edits are logically sound to me and comply with policy. --Pcj (TC) 15:10, 27 June 2007 (UTC)
I will actually propose an amendment to the policy, shortly. I'm not claiming that you're violating it, I'm claiming that you're abusing it. -- TUSVA ~ T | C 15:16, 27 June 2007 (UTC)
That's fine, just remember the admin who manages the speedy delete category always has final decision whether to actually delete the article or not. I'm simply marking pages which do not have content. --Pcj (TC) 15:18, 27 June 2007 (UTC)
I'm very well aware of that. What you're doing is basically creating a TON of unnecessary work for the admins to have to comb through the piles of SD spam you've created to decide what's valid and what isn't because you've arbitrarily decided it "has no content" and is "abandonded". -- TUSVA ~ T | C 15:19, 27 June 2007 (UTC)
I have reasonable criteria for putting up SD tags and have been agreed with by an admin before (see above discussion, n.b. Gryphon's remarks), so I'm merely continuing. If they ask me to stop, I will. The process is hardly out of control or unreasonable. --Pcj (TC) 15:22, 27 June 2007 (UTC)
I see quite a few I personally won't be deleting. I think some SD tags are bit excessive. I don't mind deleting something that just has a stub and cats, but if there is some sort of content like an images or lore snippet, info that people did some work to contribute, I don't think they should have been tagged. I think SD policy needs some tweaking. --GRYPHONtc 15:24, 27 June 2007 (UTC)
OK. --Pcj (TC) 15:26, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

Battlegroup

By this page I see you have been busy. What does it matter if a battlegroup box is put on a guild page? The reader can still come into the page without ever seeing the server page. Yes it's redundant but it rounds out our guild page nicely. Surely you have better things to do.--Drain 00:19, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

Sorry, I thought it was placed there by mistake; it didn't provide any added navigation bonus. --Pcj (TC) 00:21, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

Change to APB/Row

What was the purpose of your change there? Parameters 5 and 6 (region and server) are never blank, so {{{11|{{{6|{{{5|}}}}}}}}} causes the {{#if:...}} to always return true. Can you give me an example of the negative behavior you were trying to fix? User:DarkRyder/Sig 00:23, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

This. (also this and this.) I'm thinking includeonly tags on the class row pages themselves might work. --Pcj (TC) 00:25, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
Those are created through use of the {{#ifexist:...}} parser function. Trying to get templates which use it off the broken links page completely is likely to be more effort than it's worth, wouldn't you think? Yes, the Row template could be fixed by <includeonly>-ing it and all the class-specific templates (and I'll probably do that for all the APB templates, anyway), but templates like {{grc}} actually rely on the broken-link behavior in order to work. User:DarkRyder/Sig 00:49, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
It shouldn't need to rely on that, a simple #switch parser function might work...though I haven't bothered going through and figuring out how {{Grc}} works. In any case, APB should be easily fixed, and removing red links (and/or making them blue) where possible is always good. --Pcj (TC) 00:55, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
I'm getting ready to fix the APB templates now, but {{grc}} is... complicated. When you say "red links", you're referring to the Wanted Pages, yes? Links to those "false" pages shouldn't exist elsewhere. User:DarkRyder/Sig 00:59, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
Yes, that's right. --Pcj (TC) 01:00, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
Okay, the APB ones have been wrapped. I've been wanting to try to make a new version of {{grc}} which takes better advantage of the new parser functions. It may take me a couple of weeks to get to it, but when I do, I'll also look into keeping it from spamming the Wanted pages. User:DarkRyder/Sig 01:17, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, sounds good. If you need any help, let me know. --Pcj (TC) 01:19, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

Vash, kel, etc. navigation boxes

So, any reason for removing the top navigation boxes? the pages are pretty inaccesible now that you removed them.

So, unless you have a better alternative, i recommend putting them back.
Also, please refrain from editing user pages, use the talk page in case any modifications need to be made. User:CrazyJack/Sig 07:53, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
I recommend moving them back to their original pages, Kel'Thuzad and Kel'Thuzad (tactics). The template was pure evil. I doubt Pcj did so without some support from an admin or two. iirc, there wasn't much support for the template, period. --Sky (t · c · w) 07:57, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
There was support, and there was opposition, but no general consensus made and the subject moved to the archives. User:CrazyJack/Sig 08:00, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
Generally, and so far as I've seen, proposals without consensus are considered failed proposals. But this is what I've seen; may be different than what you've seen. --Sky (t · c · w) 08:04, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
The template was not standardized and was causing a number of red links. All other boss pages had the quotes, loot, and strategy all on the Boss (tactics) pages. Standardizing those bosses to match eliminated the need for the template. The better alternative is already implemented, see the top of the respective boss pages. --Pcj (TC) 12:16, 26 July 2007 (UTC)

Laurlybot tags on mobs

Hey Pcj. Some of the Azuremyst mobs you tagged for Laurlybot to replace were almost completely filled out, only missing some attack info that Laurlybot couldn't get anyway. Please check the content of the page before adding the laurlybot tag. For an example see the old Root Trapper page. It has everything that Laurlybot would put on there, plus some background. On the ones I noticed, I removed the mob stub and put in an ability stub for the abilities section, as that is all that is missing for these mobs - hopefully this will help avoid confusion in the future. --Jiyambi t || c 19:45, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

Ability isn't the correct stub for that, but the page is also missing drops, and the actual information Laurlybot would remove is minimal. --Pcj (TC) 19:51, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
Okay, should I put a mob stub in that area? Personally for this type of mob I would rather just remove the drop and abilities sections, the mob is so simple that they aren't really needed. I still don't think that mobs which have this much info should just be blown away. And honestly I hate Laurlybot's generated drops sections. But that's just me. My request stands, but if you really feel it should be replaced then go ahead. --Jiyambi t || c 23:18, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
I don't think there is any appropriate stub for sections of mob articles except Stub/Mob, but I agree that the ability section is probably best reserved for boss mobs. I wouldn't put the basic melee there, anyway, it's rather obvious and makes it look even more incomplete. You're right, though, WoWWiki should be more than just another database site, the history is good. --Pcj (TC) 23:30, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
I changed the three articles I was concerned with and added their notable drops. Hope they are satisfactory now. Thanks again for your consideration. --Jiyambi t || c 23:29, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
Should be fine. --Pcj (TC) 23:30, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
Thanks again :) I am just going to remove the ability sections then for those mobs. If the mob has some sort of special ability, it would be useful to note, but for basic melee - maybe only mention if it is a particularly hard hitter or something. --Jiyambi t || c 00:40, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

stubs

Are you having the bot run past naked links, or all items on : Category:Item stubs ? theres's quite a lot of items still pretty barren. User:CrazyJack/Sig 13:12, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

I've gone through item stubs once, there might be some new ones, otherwise I just mark the red links as I see them. --Pcj (TC) 13:14, 5 September 2007 (UTC)
"some", yeh.. well over 10+ pages worth of stubs :P User:CrazyJack/Sig 13:20, 5 September 2007 (UTC)
Not all stubs need to be re-processed, they have as much content as the bot will add, or more. Foxbot even marks some of its entries as stubs. --Pcj (TC) 13:23, 5 September 2007 (UTC)
hmm. maybe add a special "botstub" tag to them, so you can filter out completed entries better.. its an inhuman task if you wanted to look trough the new stubs to process otherwise. User:CrazyJack/Sig 13:27, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

On quest pages, do levels in parantheses denote that the quest becomes available at that level? I want to make sure before making any edits. I noticed that on the Quest: A Haunted History page it's listed as 69 (69), when I was able to get the quest at 67. Thanks for any help! Alein 06:15, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

About the 'It has been suggested' on the Interface Portal main page ...

Hi,

I got an issue (or two)with the "It has been suggested" notice that you stuck to the very top of the Interface Portal main page:

1) Thats a main portal page meant for users seeking information. It should show a state and information useful and helpful to users of WoW-Wikki. In my view it should not become annotated with page editor remarks. Notices about how the page might (or might not) be modified internally should not appear on a main portal page. 99 out of 100 people visiting the page for information will not know what your notice means, are not interested in what it says, and might even feel annoyed by having to scroll down because its there.

If you have notices or requests about how to update or improve the page, please post them to the page discussion forum or address them to an Admin.

2) The notice itself fails to explain who suggested exactly what, and where this suggestion happened. Was it you suggesting a change ? Is that note the only actual manifestation of this suggestions ? I have perused the "Discussion" board for the page and also this Talk page here and could find no further information.

I thought instead of fighting a stupid page reversal war up to the point where it annoys an Admin it would be better to talk about this.

Regarding Item Updates

Bouncing through some random pages yesterday, I noticed that a couple items lacked an info source on wowwiki. (ie. Inv jewelry ring 05 [Ring of the Moon]) Being new to this whole process and not really having updated 'Items' yet, I figured I'd give it a go. I updated 2 of the 3 with a manual item box. Returning to the page an hour or so later, I saw you'd added a stub that the item was to be updated by Foxbot. In the stub, it specifically states:

All content on this page will be replaced. If you edit this page to match the Item Boilerplate, remove this tag.

With this in mind, I went to update the Inv misc bag 07 red [Large Knapsack],the last of the items from the aforementioned page that needed an update. This time, however, I copied the source from the boilerplate and filled it in accordingly (with one minor error that was corrected expediently). Perusing the page this morning, I saw that you had dropped the stub on this article as well. This made me wonder:

Is this standard procedure for all new items? Did I incorrectly use the boilerplate?

Not that big a deal, but I figure if there's an automated way to add missing item info, it would be a good deal easier than filling in those boilerplates. And if I was making an error, I'd be keen on knowing what it was so as to prevent making it in the future. I'm sure there's a way to add a signature to input on a talk page like this, but I won't learn that until 'Wiki 301 - Sigs' or whichever course that one's in. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by K10wn (talk · contr).

I like to see categories and item level in addition to what you had on large knapsack; ring of the moon is even further away from the boilerplate. See WW:SIG for signature ideas. --Pcj (TC) 16:37, 2 November 2007 (UTC)
On the first 2 items I added (Inv jewelry ring 05 [Ring of the Moon] & Inv jewelry ring 02 [Carnelian Loop]), I did not use the boilerplate, I simply reproduced the loot box as it appears in game and on most WoW-related sites. So reading the stub, I understood why it had been placed there.
Based on the information set forth in the stub, I copied the Boilerplate verbatim for the Inv misc bag 07 red [Large Knapsack] (not sure what Foxbot looked for when updating items, I even left all the extraneous N/A info in it, though I see it has been removed since).
I have added the item level and I believe the category of the item has been there (Container), although you may be looking for something else in that regard (Trade Goods??)

No, I mean categories for the page. --Pcj (TC) 18:20, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

DS1, DS2 & Tier 1-3 Set Page Formatting

Just wondering what your plans are for updating all of the DS1, DS2 & Tier 1, 2, 3 set pages.

I've noticed that a lot of my previous work updating those pages to a more stream-lined look & feel have been over-written with a standard table outline.

IE: Battlegear of Valor -vs- Battlegear of Wrath

Thanks.

Ardor 18:17, 3 November 2007 (UTC)

I'm changing all tables to darktable as I come across them for purposes of standardization. --Pcj (TC) 18:38, 3 November 2007 (UTC)

Is there a document/directive outlining the necessity of this standardization as being applicable to the class tiered set pages (DS1-T6)? I ask, simply as the darktable isn't exactly what I'd call "asthetically pleasing" and has actually detracted from the usefulness of the tier set pages that have been updated.

Case & point: Vestments of Transcendence (darktable) -vs- Vestments of the Virtuous (template - armorset), even at 1600x1200, the darktable template makes for a very "cluttered" look, especially the 3rd table fragment for Set Stats. The armorset template incorporated color-specific-per-tier background colouring, logical grouping/breakup of stats on an alphabetical "Vitals - Resists - Bonuses" level and visual icon aides to quickly identify set pieces.

Back the resolution down to 1280x1024 or 1024x760 and the user-experience in being able to quickly & efficiently locate key stat information on the darktable template for Vestments of Transcendence certainly is not easy, and could be argued as being prohibitive compared to competitor-sites such as Thottbot & WowHead.

Thoughts? Ideas?

Ardor 19:08, 3 November 2007 (UTC)

I'm sorry, I see it completely the opposite the way you apparently see it. Darktable is more compact, easier to read. The icons on the old style are not particularly easier to figure out than text. Finally, the rows and columns on the set item stats still need to be swapped, as far as I'm concerned. I've done so at Vestments of Transcendence, added in some alternating row colors, and moved around the columns a bit. --Pcj (TC) 20:25, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
Malorne Regalia was brought up on the IRC when I mentioned this, which is a better solution than either as far as I'm concerned. --Pcj (TC) 20:33, 3 November 2007 (UTC)

Could you elaborate, I checked the tooltip results on other pages before and after to make sure everything worked. —MJBurragetalk • 18:41, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Not so much that it worked, moreso proper formatting. --Pcj (TC) 18:44, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

What was improper? —MJBurragetalk • 18:45, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Recipe: Delicious Chocolate Cake

You just undid my edit to Inv scroll 05 [Recipe: Delicious Chocolate Cake] as well. I still do not know what you consider improper about my edits. Also, if it is just something wrong in the Tooltips, why are you reverting the whole page in both cases? —MJBurragetalk • 19:30, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

"Proper" formatting in this case seems to be
  • deemed correct: Fooberries (2) Nubnuts (22)
  • deemed incorrect: Fooberries x2 Nubnuts x22
a policy I have yet to locate anywhere. However, the parenthesis method echos the display by the game client.
And apparently, reverting was simply easier than making this one change. Other data had simply been rearranged, and information of value vanished temprarily due to the revert. TBH, Burrage, I prefer your ordering of data. --Eirik Ratcatcher 20:20, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

Please put stubs at the top of the page

You will notice they sometimes conflict with the tooltip if you put them in a section or something like that. This is a bug with the CSS, I think, but until that gets fixed, please put stubs at the top of the page unless they must go somewhere else. --Gengar orange 22x22 Fandyllic (talk · contr) 7:26 PM PST 29 Nov 2007

"This article or section is an item stub...". The section the stub is under is the part of the article lacking content. If it bothers you so much, fix the CSS. --Pcj (TC) 03:29, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
I have to go with Fandy on this - they're designed for the top of a page. The section thing is for long pages where most of the content is filled out, and it makes no sense to have a stub at the top referring to something off the screen. Edit: I think that note isn't on the WW:MOS, will have to add it. Kirkburn  talk  contr 03:53, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, I know the stubs are supposed to serve dual purpose, but they just don't work well when not at the top of the page. I might try to make it so you can alter the width of the stub box, but it seems kind of risky right now. It was just as a request. --Gengar orange 22x22 Fandyllic (talk · contr) 9:11 PM PST 29 Nov 2007
I was merely standardizing it to the more common way Foxbot does it. You should consult with Foxlit about it, too. And of course, fix the CSS. :P --Pcj (TC) 05:16, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
The CSS is fine, it's just a restriction of how different page elements interact. Kirkburn  talk  contr 16:12, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
CSS is what controls how the page elements interact. You can adjust the margin in CSS. If nothing else, you could always set the z-index such that they overlap better (tooltip should always be on top in my opinion). --Pcj (TC) 16:19, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
I know what the CSS does, and I also read very long talk pages on Wikipedia going over this issue. The z-index thing does sound like the best compromise. Kirkburn  talk  contr 16:30, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

The bug is with tooltip, not the CSS, unless Kirkburn changed more than the colors on his import from WP. Ambox is supposed to shrink to fit between infoboxes, or tooltips, as the case may be. Which would suggest that how the template was originally done isn't correct. --Sky (talk | con | wh) 22:05, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

Ambox is using a table when it should use a DIV. --Pcj (TC) 22:07, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
"Should" is a relative word. I might look out the Wikipedia talk pages about it at some point, should be under Wikipedia:Article message boxes. Kirkburn  talk  contr 23:26, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
Well, I mean to float better with the tooltips, it would have to be a DIV. --Pcj (TC) 23:33, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

Like maybe a note on my talk page? --Gengar orange 22x22 Fandyllic (talk · contr) 12 AM PST 3 Dec 2007

Since you decided to just make some comments on Kaydeethree's talk page and not address me directly on your talk page or mine, nor did you explain your deletions on the talk pages of the articles. I've decided to put you as a {{suspect}} on the WoWWiki:Violations list. See WoWWiki:Policy/Editing#Removing_content for why. --Gengar orange 22x22 Fandyllic (talk · contr) 8:49 PM PST AM
I have explained it. Duplication of content is suitable reason to remove. {{speedydelete}} is subject to administrator approval. I do want to say that I have somewhat reconsidered supporting hover tooltips for objects (it will need some framework on what exactly is going to be displayed), but I don't think using links that look like {{loot}} would be advisable, since that would seem to me to lead to confusion. --Pcj (TC) 16:57, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
{{tooltip}} is designed for in-game items, in addition, that is just way too much for a mouse over tooltip..   Zurr  TC 17:00, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, I agree there. Depends on what you would put in the object tooltip, really. I can maybe see name and location, maybe a short list of possibilities of what's inside if it's a container-type item. --Pcj (TC) 17:03, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
Explaining yourself after the fact and only because of prompting is pretty weak in my opinion. I could have made you a suspect before you explained yourself. Maybe being on the suspect list will make you be a little more thoughtful when you do stuff in WoWWiki for a while. Or, it might just make you mad and at least you can stand in my shoes for a little bit. --Gengar orange 22x22 Fandyllic (talk · contr) 9:04 AM PST 6 Dec 2007
No, I really don't care about the suspect list. If you don't want to work together on establishing an object tooltip, I don't have anything further to say on this issue. --Pcj (TC) 17:07, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
LOL, work together? You got it deleted. Why don't you restore it and then we'll talk. --Gengar orange 22x22 Fandyllic (talk · contr) 10:12 AM PST 6 Dec 2007
Whatever. I've extended an olive branch; if you want to be belligerent, that's your choice. I don't really care either way. Well, I suppose it's less work for me since you obviously don't want to do it, so that's a plus. Here's what should happen, in my opinion:
  • We should discuss what exactly goes in the object tooltip.
  • We should discuss what the link to the object should appear as, if not simply a regular link with the necessary <span class="objectlink"></span>
--Pcj (TC) 18:22, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

template:mobbox broken due to changes to template:npcbox?

I noticed on the ZA boss pages that the Race line in the mobbox was invalid. It looks like this on the web page:

Race [[{{{race}}}]] (Humanoid)

The template:mobbox hasn't been changed in a while, but it uses the template:npcbox that was recently updated by one of your edits. Is it possible that this caused the break in the mobbox template? I'm guessing that Race used to be an optional parameter before, and now it seems that it's required, breaking any pages that use mobbox.

OK, this should be fixed now. --Pcj (TC) 16:07, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Paper Flying Machine Kit

Why'd you change it Pcj, I thought it was fine and you just removed half of the article, which was an important part talking about the Inv misc toy 09 [Paper Flying Machine], I merged the two articles because it was requested.

It looked better, was more intresting and gave more information in my version, I request you to change it back as I wrote it. You don't want an angry Tauren , do you? Felhoof 12:55, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Doesn't seem to make much sense to merge the two pages. They're two completely different items, even if one just makes the other. We have plenty of item pages (like Inv crate 03 [Adamantite Arrow Maker] creates Inv ammo arrow 02 [Adamantite Stinger]) that work like this, so I'd assume that this should follow in that example as well. Problem with books

Do you have a problem with making the pages (with readable items) look nicer. Nearly every page with readable text uses:

<blockquote> {| cellpadding="10" width="60%" |- | bgcolor="black" | |} </blockquote>

with the % depending on how much text. and yet you wthings to glide through the whole page. Making it not only not match how the rest of them are done, but you make it look unprofessional. If I had to make a guess, I bet the only reason you undid what I did, is cause how you feel towards me. SnakeSssssssssssssssssssssssss Coobra sig3For Pony! WW:MOS and metal bar pages

I found the metal bar pages (Inv ingot iron [Iron Bar], et al) distinctly unpleasant. I was halfway into restoring the metal bar pages to a useful appearance when I noted that you'd reverted a change someone else had made that was essentially what I was doing.

Either the MOS must be changed, or an exception granted. The Metal Bar template is long compared to the "info box" of the tooltip template. This distorts the page greatly, leaving a vast empty space on the right of "nav bar". This looks VERY bad.

Please note that MOS is a guideline only, and not a reason to create poor layouts. See my note on WW:MOS. If it requires a vote to change the MOS to convince you on this issue, I will start one. I don't want to start an edit war, but be aware that I feel that strongly on this particular case. --Eirik Ratcatcher 20:08, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

The MOS can be changed, but Kirkburn apparently feels strongly about it as well, and I personally believe that the vertical navboxes should be converted to horizontal or merged to an existing infobox. I will edit pages to fit the MOS, but not so far as to take it to an edit war. Push it to a vote, methinks, and please, check out the related discussion on the Village pump. --PcjWowpedia wiki manager (TDrop me a line!C207,729 contributions and counting) 20:34, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
Also see, with somewhat less fire, my comment on Village Pump. Please accept my apologies for how I have handled my outrage. It takes a while to catch up to a distributed conversation like this. ... Except that I still missed the 'Converting' conversation...
I could, probably, live with a horizontal metal bars navbar, as a better alternative to the positioning a straight-jacketted, unaltered, MOS would yield. I wouldn't be happy, but I also wouldn't be moved to edit-war level unhappiness. Which makes it a viable compromise, I guess. --Eirik Ratcatcher 20:52, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

TOC on quests

Do you really think a TOC is necessary on quest pages? There are very few variations on what goes into a quest page, and the most useful links are either at the top or the bottom. The default format for a quest page generates a TOC in most cases, even when the page itself is a single screen high.

I do NOT think it is necessary, and so deliberately disable the TOC on these pages. Reenable them because they are actually needed, or not at all, please. --Eirik Ratcatcher 18:54, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

OK well you reverted the title back to the old one but that doesn't address my initial concern that the title doesn't necessarily make sense for what the article is about. It is a list of gear which has stamina but it is, more to the point, specifically about one boss encounter. What would you suggest the title should be then? 'Mage gear for tanking Krosh Firehand' would be better IMHO. My apologies for the capitalization preferences of the site. --Bobbuddha 00:14, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

The list is useful for any mage looking for gear with a lot of stamina. If you want to address the High King fight more directly, perhaps put the introduction on a separate page. --PcjWowpedia wiki manager (TDrop me a line!C207,729 contributions and counting) 00:20, 19 January 2008 (UTC)
Well if you look at the first draft it was about Krosh from the start: page history Bobbuddha 00:30, 19 January 2008 (UTC)
My note on your talk page explains why it was moved back. The article could stand to be generalized, but other than the Krosh fight, when do we need to worry about stamina gear? --k_d3 00:33, 19 January 2008 (UTC)
I don't know, perhaps for some mage who wants to be a little less squishy? I'm not a mage, so I'm not sure if stamina is really useful in PvP or whatever. --PcjWowpedia wiki manager (TDrop me a line!C207,729 contributions and counting) 00:37, 19 January 2008 (UTC)
Exactly my point, this page is about making a tanking set for a mage for a single raid encounter and this set would have no use anywhere else. A Mage PvP gear page might be slick but this ain't it, besides it would be real short: Gladiator's Regalia. I do intend to make a separate page about the strat from the tanking mage perspective. I am the tanking mage for my guild, and the last two times I've done it they were one-shots so I do speak from experience. Now one could remove the Krosh specifics and just make it one big table of gear, make the strat page and link to the table page, I just think it would be redundant. I doubt you will find any links to this page other than from High King Maulgar or Krosh Firehand pages. This is 'how to prepare ahead of time' page for Krosh, not an actual strat per-se. Bobbuddha 00:56, 19 January 2008 (UTC)
OK then. --PcjWowpedia wiki manager (TDrop me a line!C207,729 contributions and counting) 01:10, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

LoadArmoryData.php

(1) We need to add local cache. This script is gonna fetch the same xml over and over. (2) What's the licence of the armory data? Are we allowed to use their stuff? -- Nef (talk) 23:38, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Regarding the license, I don't know the exact conditions - but I do know they purposely made it available for this type of stuff. Kirkburn  talk  contr 01:06, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, if you want me to work with you on the cache, I can, I guess, but I don't really know what you need and I'm not that great with PHP (the script I have was made with a lot of help) - but caching the data is fine. And the license, I've got the same sentiment Kirkburn has; there doesn't seem to be much discussion regarding licensing published by Blizzard, and there are other sites (like http://www.wowjutsu.com) which pull data from the Armory, and have for a while without being told to stop. I can check on that if needed. --PcjWowpedia wiki manager (TDrop me a line!C207,729 contributions and counting) 01:30, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

AbilityTip

Hiya, Pcj. I had to "undo" your "clean-up". After you set things back from my input, "Instant sec cast" started showing up all over the place. However, I did see that you caught my zero mistake (also for Instant), AND ... basically, I can see why you objected to the noincludes in the first place. I'm sorry: I saw this kind of technique in Ose's work and fell in love with it. It was really cool to see the changes as I previewed them, and I left that in when I shipped to live. (Again, counter-policy, and I know.)

Just one thing I'm still not agreeing with, and am struggling to understand. Why remove the spacing? I felt I had been careful to prevent spacing from affecting the behavior of the template, and was strongly of the belief that any extra HTML produced was invisible in the end result. My mind screams in terror when I see a single paragraph of script, and I know I'm not alone. For the sake of future editors (yes, myself included), could you please leave that much?

Deletion Discussion

Hiya, I can not locate discussion or more information on a deleted stub article in these comments (nor on the original deleted page.) Article was a guild stub containing guild policies which would appear to be permitted under WW:GUILD quote --brief description of guild policies-- allowed, in an objective manner, namely its formal bylaws. There doesn't appear to be a prohibition on stub articles for guilds. Can discussion or rationale be posted on the deletion? Can't learn without information. Thanks! User:inflammadamma

Article was a guild subpage which falls under WW:GUILD policy, that is, only brief summary of guild policies allowed. Not an entire listing of guild bylaws. Guild stubs will be deleted if not fixed per "Enforcing the policy" in WW:GUILD. --PcjWowpedia wiki manager (TDrop me a line!C207,729 contributions and counting) 17:58, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

Ah, brief is a relative concept. The bylaws we posted were but a portion of full guild policies. Brief in your estimation, would be, perhaps, how many lines of text? Give me a guideline, I'll stick to it. Inflammadamma (talk) 18:01, 28 June 2008 (UTC)Inflammadamma

AWD external links comment

Noticed you were adding a fairly sizable comment to (many) pages about Elink suitability and use. Could you point me to the origin of your quest to add it? (IE who said we need it, and why-for?) Only two comments: 1) has the comment been added to the applicable boilerplates as well? (I feel it should.) 2) creating pages from scratch, this comment is an encumbrance unlikely to be continued. As such, I feel it has only limited utility. But similarly, the need for it to be in the boilerplate. Wrath of the Lich King beta version of loot JS?

Hey Pcj, now that loot uses JS for the DB links, I don't know how to make a WotLK beta version similar to the elinks-*/wotlk we have. What do you suggest? Should another loot template be made or is there some clever way to tell the JS in a modified version of the current template to use wotlk.wowhead.com/ and thottbot.com/wotlk/? Also, until the Armory and Allakhazam get WotLK beta DBs we've been hiding them. --Gengar orange 22x22 Fandyllic (talk · contr) 11:01 AM PST 6 Aug 2008

I'm not a big fan of creating a template you know you'll have to edit back when the item databases merge in all the WotLK data to their main database (as happened with elinks). Really, we should just add an extra parameter to the existing templates (|introduced=WotLK or something) for situations like this. Also, I don't think the Armory will do a WotLK beta DB. --PcjWowpedia wiki manager (TDrop me a line!C207,729 contributions and counting) 18:17, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
How much work would it be to support a |introduced=WotLK or maybe |searchdb=wotlk parameter in the {{loot}} template? I don't even know where the JS lives for loot. --Gengar orange 22x22 Fandyllic (talk · contr) 5:27 PM PST 7 Aug 2008

Working on a Template

Hey, I noticed you reverted my template back to my namespace, which is fine, but I am very interested in the hover tooltip code you've contributed. Is there an FAQ/tutorial to applying it to new templates? I was hoping to make my template have popups that show which boss the guild/player is on if they cursor over the partial and heroic partial icons. (Default of course would be no popup if nothing is entered.

I know I'd have to add more variables, but if you could point me in the right direction, I think I could figure it out. User:Omniferous/Sig 05:15, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

You should check out {{Quicktooltip}}. First parameter is where you put the text/icon, second parameter is where you put what pops up. --PcjWowpedia wiki manager (TDrop me a line!C207,729 contributions and counting) 12:21, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
Thank you very much! And I know you probably get this all the time, but your system is simply revolutionary. User:Omniferous/Sig 14:15, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

Okay, I get the Quicktooltip, so next time you have a second, can you answer this?

I'm trying to make a mechanic on my tooptip so that it works similar to the mob or npc templates, where it displays a picture and name without need for an image field. I want it to work like the npc code: if you scroll over, the boss's picture and name are displayed. How do I pull this from the character using only the name, like on the other two templates I mentioned?

I'm trying to get it to work on this one: User:Omniferous/Part. When you scroll over the icon, it should, like I said before, display a picture and name. Any ideas? User:Omniferous/Sig 15:26, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

To do that, you will have to pass the instance and the boss they're on as parameters to /Part. --PcjWowpedia wiki manager (TDrop me a line!C207,729 contributions and counting) 15:28, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
I know that, but once they are there, how can I pull up the image itself without knowing the name used in the article, like the NPC template does? User:Omniferous/Sig 15:35, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
I suggest liberal use of {{#switch}}. --PcjWowpedia wiki manager (TDrop me a line!C207,729 contributions and counting) 15:40, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
I'm just a neophyte at wiki code... Is there a page I could look at that would explain the codes to me? I only learned what I have by copying things out of other templates then experimenting in my sandbox. Suffice to say... I have no idea what {{#switch}} does. XD. I catch onto code pretty quick and I have experience in Visual Basic, Java, and C#, so if I could get an API I'd be much obliged. User:Omniferous/Sig 15:49, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
metawikipedia:Help:ParserFunctions#.23switch: --PcjWowpedia wiki manager (TDrop me a line!C207,729 contributions and counting) 15:56, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the link, but I'm not clear as to how switch will help me make the image pop up like it does in the npc template. I think it has to do with the span class 'npclink' or db (database?), based off my examination of the npc template's code. Can you explain your idea more explicitly? Or maybe I didn't explain what I was trying to do correctly. What I want to do is, having passed the name of the boss that the guild is on to /part, when someone scrolls over the icon, I want it to pop up as if they had scrolled over a character linked through the npc template (without the location and level, since those are also items passed through npc, which I don't think are important for this template). User:Omniferous/Sig 16:19, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
You will either have to store all that information in your template via switch or retrieve the information using a custom JS script similarly to how {{npc}} works. --PcjWowpedia wiki manager (TDrop me a line!C207,729 contributions and counting) 16:23, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for your help. I eventually just used JS script based heavily off the design of {{npc}}. In the end, I couldn't get tooltips to appear when cursoring over the icon, but I just made it so that the word 'partial' functions as the link text. User:Omniferous/Sig 19:15, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

Deletion of the guildpage Dragonsbane - Dragonblight (EU)

I have a question.

Why is our guild page deleted? It makes no sense to delete our page to our guild because we are still an active guild. Compared to the guilds who allready died, split up, disbanned etc.

Next to it, there was no warning either on deletion of our page. My question is why? And we arent spamming either with commercial stuff or some kind.

Atm our officers are kind off upset for losing our own guildpage.

Especially because we are an active guild on the server.

I hope it can be cleared up. Looking forward to your answer

Thanks for the respond

I see not a firm reason for the deletion, (maybe I differ on opinion in that one) but I guess we have to set up a new page then. The website was removed as well, while it is a active website link.

I shall set it up as followed by the guild policy rules, tho I have to say it feels a bit that a three year old guild (and that is what we are) are getting punished by some policy management.

I know policies has to be followed, but this deletion was not over the rules of wiki 's policy, if it was spamm, I would agree, if we where inactive/ disbanned guild I would totally agree.

Maybe we shall make it a bit more informative, I have to say we are the biggest guild on the server and active. Not something you wanna oversee on the wiki page.

If you could do something for us. Can you make our link active again, our website link is still active and being looked over and over again, I shall write by the book then a guild page. But making our website link on the guildpage inactive had no reason as well.

I hope I dont come over like an attack, I think you guys do a good job, like I said I differ on opinion a bit. I am a bit suprised by this deletion.

itemid

I noticed that you took the itemid= out of the tooltip data for Inv egg 04 [A Jubling's Tiny Home]. Is itemid= in the tooltip now deprecated? If it is, it makes sense. The only place where I know it is used is in the elinks. Where is this sort of 'how things are done' change published? Madkaugh (talk) 22:24, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

Itemid was never used in tooltip and was never a valid parameter. --PcjWowpedia wiki manager (TDrop me a line!C207,729 contributions and counting) 22:51, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

Armor Set Look Alikes (Purple Judgement Armor Set and other Detail Article Deletions)

I have a question concerning recent changes and then deletions to the Armor Set Lookalike pages. I, and other people use the set pages as a reference on those armor sets. They appear to be complete and provide more than just the cursory information that the root page (the page that lists ALL of the sets in a long list) provides such as individual statistics, total statistics, etc. Previously the article was modified by a user to simply redirect to the root list of all the sets of armor. I changed this back (assuming it's a free wiki for people to modify within the rules) so that people could access the page. The next day I noticed that not only was the link taken away from the root list, but the Purple Judgement Set Details page was competed deleted, by the same user that created the redirect. Is it common to delete articles on this wiki? I am just wondering what the reasoning is for completely deleting something useful (as well as the other lookalike set detail pages) from a public wiki? Once it's deleted the article is gone so if the community changes its mind or decides it wants that article, there's no returning it. Is the wiki running low on storage space?

Thank You... CyberNigma (talk) 20:50, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

It's not a real set, the page was incorrectly named, and the information on the page was out of date. Finally, there is no information presented there regarding the individual items that cannot be discovered from Set look alikes. --PcjWowpedia wiki manager (TDrop me a line!C207,729 contributions and counting) 20:55, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
Ahh, I agree on it not being a real set, as the root still says Set Look Alikes, but even not being a real set, it was something that people sought out as a set. Almost all of the armor is actually out of date with 3.0.2 changes to many or the primary stats. Is the wiki really that strict on whether a set has to be a real '1/x Set'? I would think look alikes are their own category. As far as the second part of the response, as I mentioned previously, it's really about having a convenient page showing all of the details of what most people will seek out as a set, whether for RP, looks, use, whatever it may be. I'm not a rules lawyer, but that seems fairly reasonable. ? I'm not being argumentative, I'm just not understanding the strictness of something such as that. Maybe it's okay to have it grouped together and not be an official set if people are looking for it. I think it was blizzard's intention to introduce the pieces as an unofficial set, otherwise they wouldn't have carefully recolored the Judgement Set, made the pieces related to each other and placed them in the game (with every piece included) ? I would suggest that instead of calling them say, for example, Purple Judgement Set -> Purpe Judgement Armor and still have a details page for it in which people looking for (again, the same example) the Purple Judgement Armor (for RP or as a healing 'set') can look it up in one place. It doesn't confuse anyone and I imagine it doesn't take up much space.  ? CyberNigma (talk) 21:12, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
I saw your other comment, and I won't add anything more on that page. For the most part, it's about convenience and detail being in one spot (why most of us come to a wiki in the first place). I hope you understand the point I'm trying to make? CyberNigma (talk) 21:16, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
OK, that seems fine. I've restored the page to Purple Judgement armor. --PcjWowpedia wiki manager (TDrop me a line!C207,729 contributions and counting) 21:39, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for listening (I hope that's the case and you don't just want me to shut up :-). I hope you understand what I was trying to say - I figure the best way to make the wiki better is to try to reasonably convince you and not complain or insult as is also common on some sites. I look at wowhead, which I use sometimes as well and they merely list the pieces and stats in the comments. It's things like that which keep many of us preferring the wiki here over that :-) One more off topic. I just recently disabled javascript for your site in firefox (via noscript). Something about the tooltips is sometimes causing firefox to lock up completely. It's only very recently that has happened. CyberNigma (talk) 21:54, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
Interesting, I'll see if I can find anything. --PcjWowpedia wiki manager (TDrop me a line!C207,729 contributions and counting) 21:56, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Confused about Tooltips

So Category talk:Pages which may need their tooltip template updated still has no description, so I'm still confused why it's flagged on Achievement worldevent valentine [Fool For Love], even though that page is not an item. So should I just ignore the aforementioned tooltip?

Also since I clearly added the Achievement tooltip idea in the wrong place, should I repost somewhere else? Thanks! -Howbizr (talk) 01:31, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

You should ignore the category if you don't know what needs to be done. I recommend posting on the village pump about your achievement tooltip. --PcjWowpedia wiki manager (TDrop me a line!C207,729 contributions and counting) 01:42, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Category

Do you mind if I resurrect the category later then? I was intending to flag a bunch of articles but I ran out of time before work. The cat was to go along with that other subcat (which I see has been deleted as well, so I forget what it's called now). -Howbizr (talk) 14:06, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

Suggestion and a Thanks

I want to thank you for checking out on the guy who was reverting edits on our realm progress page without using Talk. But now I have an interesting question.

I know we can put tooltips on items, npcs, etc, but is there a way to put a tooltip in the "MM/DD/YY" format on say, a single letter?

The reason I ask is because our realm is looking for an elegant solution to the problem of indicating when the boss kills were made for each boss in each guild in the upcoming expansion.

I'm no wowwiki expert, but I think this sort of thing isn't available right now because it uses JS and JS can be used maliciously when you give people the ability to put whatever they want in them. However, if there already is a preset Item template and whatnot, would it be possible to implement a ##/##/## format for a tooltip?

Also, if you just have any good ideas that can be used on a page setup like Server:Aerie Peak US/Level 70 raid Progression (where every boss has a letter representing it) to indicate the date for each boss in each guild's row, I'd love to hear them. Is there a "better" (some kind of wiki markup) way to change text color than HTML font tags?

Red links

I thought I would ask here since there are 100 articles or more and I would have to repeat myself. I was looking at Category:NPC stubs and saw many, many articles with no info but a stub. I thought we weren't supposed to create red link pages with no info just to add a stub? Guild page deleted, not sure why

Hi Pcj, our guild page at Guild:Jesters_(Silvermoon_US) was deleted and I see some others came here for reasons when this happened to them. The page was recently updated to reflect the expansion release so I believe it was current. The format I copied from another guild's progress page a while back, and the page was on the brief side.
